Viable micro-organisms are common on urban surfaces and within indoor air. Microbial levels are relevant to indoor air quality as they can cause allergies and infections and may also negatively impact on an area’s aesthetics by affecting surface coatings and releasing odorous volatile organic compounds.

The human body is well adapted to cope with most micro-organisms that are regularly encountered. As such it has not been possible for the scientific community to reproducibly establish levels of micro-organisms (on surfaces or in air) that are considered to be ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’.
